Research in to and use of music -TRAILER

Research in to appropriate music:

Me and another member of my group watched horror trailers within the same sub genre as ours in order to get an idea of what type of music is generally used in real trailers. We found that a lot of trailers begin with slow, strange music that gradually progresses in order to set the atmosphere of the trailer.

We found that faster soundtracks are generally used as the narrative of the trailer develops and so we decided to follow this common convention. 

Use of music

For the beginning of Our trailer, we used music that mimicked the sound of a clock. We used this in order to set the pace as it gradually gets faster. We also used this music as we found it created a sense of urgency/panic. 

We chose to use the song 'Strangers' by Sigrid for the next scene. We chose this music as we felt that the lyrics in the song fit perfectly with this part of the plot. 

Just like in the movies
It starts to rain and we
We're the broken beauties
Blindfolded minds collide and we fall

The first and last lines of the verse of the song stood out to us the most as it directly references 'The movies' After further researching the meaning behind this song I found that it can be interpreted as reflecting relationships in the real world and how they are not the same as those portrayed in films. 

I also found an interview with the artist where she further talks about the meaning of the song and how it's about wanting something that it's not. In our narrative, the antagonist (Paige) Wants a friendship with Olivia but she can't have one. In our trailer, the song creates a contrast with the previous eerie music as it has a slightly more lighthearted tone and therefore emphasises the equilibrium at the start versus the disequilibrium as the plot progresses. As The song gets to the line 'and we fall' the warner bro's opening theme begins which creates a slight Enigma as the audience are still unsure of what is happening.

The remix of the song 'Ready or Not' was also used in our trailer. We chose to use a choir version of this song as The background echoes added a more sinister effect to the song. This song starts off slow and then builds up a faster pace which linked directly with our narrative as in the scene that the song is used, The song starts off slow and the footage is a simple panning shot of pictures of Paige and scenes of Olivia tracking her on Snapmaps. We chose to pair this song with this scene as the lyrics are 'Ready or not, here i come, can't hide, gonna find you..' Which is literally what the antagonist in our narrative is doing as she is tracking the protagonist by using her phone, and following her.

As the song starts to progress and the loud thud sounds come in, the footage cuts to Paige (The antagonist) Breaking in to Olivia's house. The scene ends with Paige laying under Olivia's bed and the lyrics 'Ready or not, here I come you cant hide, gonna follow you' carry on.

The two songs used in our trailer both help to create a contrast between the scenes as the songs are 'normal' everyday songs however the footage that we have paired them with, creates a sinister outlook towards the songs.

Individual contribution

In the filming process, I filmed many of the shots and also helped to direct the shots. I filmed the end scene where the main character is under the bed, as well as the scene in the woods when the character is being dragged. I also filmed the scene in the woods where the character is running. I had to work with a range of different shot types and lighting in order to get the best shot. I ensured that we shot the same scenes numerous times in order to make sure that we had more than one filming in case of any errors in the footage. I also filmed scenes that didn't get put in to the final trailer as the story line was adjusted.

My main responsibility was to create the magazine cover for our horror trailer. I took the photo for the magazine cover in the schools photo studio. When taking the photo we had to test out different types of lighting and take multiple shots to see which shot looked the best. When putting the magazine cover together, I had to think of good cover lines that would link to horror. (With the help of another member of my group) and I had to find fonts that would look good. When creating the magazine cover I also had to create a house style that would flow well and also make sure that the cover linked with the trailer and the poster. I found it extremely useful to look at real media texts when creating the magazine cover as it helped me to decide on text placement, fonts and cover lines.

I also contributed to the construction of the poster. I took the picture for the poster. When taking the picture I had to adjust the lighting in order to gain our desired effect. I took multiple shots at different angles and with different lighting to make sure that we had a good enough picture for our final media product. I made multiple changes to the poster as we felt that the 'finished product' didn't look as good as it could have and should have.When editing the poster, I once again had to find fonts that would look good. I also had to center the picture and re arrange the text placements to make everything more centered and even. I found it helpful to look at real posters as it helped me to identify common conventions of horror film posters. 

I didn't have a huge contribution in terms of hands on editing however I did contribute to music/soundtrack decisions and I also helped to research different music that would fit well with our footage. I helped to decide which footage would be used in our final trailer as well as deciding on who would play the roles in the trailer. I also gave continuous feedback to the person editing the trailer so that we could decide together on what looked best for our final product.
